Benefits of Anuloma Viloma – Alternate Nostril Breathing

Raise your dominant hand and bring into Vishnu mudra by folding down the index and middle fingers. If using the right hand; close the right nostril with the thumb and inhale, close both nostrils and retain the breath internally, keeping the left nostril closed, release the right nostril and exhale completely. With the left nostril closed, inhale through the right, close both nostrils and retain, breathing out through the left. This is one round. The ration is 1:3:2. So therefore inhaling for 3 counts, retaining for 9 counts and exhaling for 6.

There is scientific evidence that the nasal cycle corresponds with brain function. The electrical activity of the brain was found to be greater on the side opposite the less congested nostril.

The right side of the brain controls creative activity while the left side controls logical verbal activity. Research has shown that when the left nostril was obstructed, the right side of the brain was predominant. When the right nostril was obstructed the left side of the brain was predominant.

Anuloma Viloma doesn't just have an effect on the brain, the body is purified also. It cures diseases linked to the disturbance of the VATA DOSHA like gout, rheumatism and reproductive organ imbalances.
